History of Beverley Lions

Beverley Lions Club was formed in 1960 and at present hold meetings in The Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley, previously we met at the Beverley Arms Hotel.

The former Mayor of  Beverley, Albert Meadley was a founder member.

The early days saw things like, the regular visits to Lion Ted Askew a long term patient in Driffield Hospital, coal distribution to deserving cases on Christmas morning and a Meals on Wheels vehicle presented to the WRVS c.1977.

The first Beverley Lions Carnival  held in 1974 raised £600 which was donated to the Beverley Minster Building Fund.

1973 saw to Quatercentenary celebrations of the granting of the Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1573. Two Beverley lions were joint Treasurer of the Quatercentenary committee.  Beverley Lions took part in many events during that year, including a service at The Minster in the presence of the Queen. Six Lions and their wives were in the party to greet Princes Anne at the service at St Mary’s to conclude the years celebrations.

Beverley also hosted a weekend on the Westwood for a Jousting Tournament and a pitched battle by The Sealed Knot society. The Lions final effort was a Fireworks display which turned out to be the fore runner of of the present Bonfire and Fireworks display held every November 5th.
